It was staggeringly refreshing to play a game which toyed with seriousness, childish flights of fantasy, and humour so well, so often. Of course, this is all a sneakily crafted series of twists, but it adds a real warmth to the story which is so often missing in this genre. What makes this narrative shine over its roughly 15-hour journey is that the grandchildren interject into the story, suddenly adding enemies or changing story events to suit themselves. Instead, FDG Entertainment and Castle Pixel realised that no story ever told to a child goes intact. What follows could easily have become a ho-hum Zelda pastiche. In response, he offers to tell them the story of The Kingdom of Blossom. The premise is laid out: Two children, Lily and Chrys, demand a fairy-tale from their grandfather. Blossom Tales carefully, cleverly, manages to balance being an homage and it’s own self.īlossom Tales makes its tone perfectly clear in the opening cutscene. In fairness to the game, this is probably the most accurate short blurb ever written. It really feels at home on the portable console and I would, once again, highly recommend picking up this superb indie title. Having that feedback makes every sword swing and shield block feel fantastic.

Throw the joy-con HD rumble on top of this, and you can perhaps see why I am so enamored with Blossom Tales on Switch. It’s a little touch which makes Blossom Tales stand out in the already outstanding indie marketplace on the Nintendo eshop. Blossom Tales is still resplendent in its old-school visuals when docked or in handheld mode.

This is not the case in Blossom Tales on Nintendo Switch.īeing able to put the Switch to sleep, and effectively pause the game, means that I can settle in for a session of exploring without the fear that I may be called away to deal with the real world. You don’t have the luxury of save points to capture exactly where you were, and leaving the game means starting at the beginning again. As anybody who has ever played a Legend of Zelda, dungeon-explorer style game will tell you, getting dragged away mid-dungeon crawl is infuriating.
